Healthy Schools
In the 2024/2025 academic year, we are aiming to achieve healthy schools accreditation.
What is a healthy school?
A healthy school is one that promotes physical, social, emotional and mental health and helps equip pupils, staff and families with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health. A healthy school is one that’s successful in supporting pupils to do their best and build on their achievements; it is committed to ongoing improvement and development.
What is the Healthy Schools Programme?
The National Healthy Schools Programme (NHSP) was originally set up by the Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families. It aims to support children in developing healthy lives so that they can live active lives and make a positive contribution to society and the environment. It’s a long-term initiative which is making a significant difference to the health and achievement of children and young people. The National Healthy Schools Programme promotes the links between health, behaviour and achievement. It’s about creating healthy and happy children and young people, who do better in learning and in life.
What are the aims of the Healthy Schools Programme?
The National Healthy Schools Programme’s vision is for all children and young people to be healthy and achieve at school and in life. They believe that by providing opportunities at school for enhancing physical and emotional health and wellbeing, they will improve long term health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise achievement for all.
They aim to deliver real benefits for children and young people, specifically to help:
- support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours;
- reduce health inequalities;
- promote social inclusion;
